Through brainstorming sessions and wireframe deliverables, I assisted the team in concepting an app for readers who wanted to get caught up with the news quickly. Layouts explored in the wireframes included various article displays, a sticky scrolling category bar, and the sprinkling of quotes throughout. Features explored beyond the news included a dynamically changing personalized greeting, a small weather module, a traffic module, and a quick-add-to-calendar event module.
The Times' talented in-house team carried out further refinements, features, and visual design of the app. The greeting and weather were combined in a display that changes depending on the time of day you open the app, giving it a continuously fresh feeling. New features to note include the ability to save an article for easy access to read later, a section for staff picks, and the ability to see live updates to articles inline.
The Times released NYT Now on April 02, 2014.
